Does it really? I hear people repeat this but never with anything to back it up.

The main reason the fires are harder to control latterly is because green activists preventing proper forest management by blocking any attempts to clear fire breaks and banning controlled burns meaning there's a huge ready made fuel load when the fire eventually starts.
