They were closer to the essence of Islam, but that was not how the majority of Islamic states functioned.
Zionism absolutely is fascism. Adolf Eichmann worked with Feivel Polkes from the Haganah to get Jews to Israel. Benzion Netanyahu, Bibi's father, supported Mussolini to get military training for his terrorist organization. The SS published articles in their newspaper praising Zionism. Yitzhak Shamir, later prime minister of Israel, promoted an alliance between Nazi Germany and Zionists as late as 1941. Zionists also explicitly defined themselves as a settler colonialist movement, exactly the same as what the Nazis said they wanted to do in Eastern Europe.
