About a month ago, I was sitting at 198 pounds, mostly fat, no endurance, and zero upper body strength. I couldn’t do a single pull up. My energy was shit. I felt heavy, slow, and disconnected from the body I knew I could have if I just committed.

Now I’m at 180 pounds. That’s 18 pounds down, and for the first time in a long time, I’m not just losing fat, I’m starting to see muscle show up.

I know it's not crazy but the progress feels really nice.

Thanks, here’s what I’ve been doing.

Spoiler: Workout / diet

• Mostly bodyweight stuff: pushups, incline rows, planks, core work
• Running 3x/week, starting slow (like 1.5–2 miles, gradually increasing). I can run minimum 3 - 5 miles now.
• Added lat pulldowns and band assisted pull-ups to build towards doing full pull-ups
• One full rest day, but I stretch daily

Diet:

• Cut out soda, chips, and fast food completely expect for Sunday (still get limited portions).
• Eating clean but simple: eggs, chicken, rice, oats, fruit, peanut butter
• Drinking tons of water and tracking portions (not strict counting, but mindful)

Had a good phone call with my recruiter recently. He told me that I should make a list of other MOS options just in case Combat Correspondent (4341) isn't available when I’m ready to sign my contract.


But honestly the more I look at the other jobs the marines have to offer, I see there are a lot of cool roles that could fit me well.

Here’s what I’m currently considering:

• PSYOPS (Psychological Operations)
• Assault Amphibious Vehicle Crewman (1833)
• Ammunition Tech / EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal)
• Legal Services Specialist (4421)

I finished my GED orientation and scored high on the placement test, way better than I expected. Honestly, I went in nervous, thinking I might feel behind or out of place because I haven't been in school for a while, but it turns out I'm more better than I thought. This feels like the first real step toward turning my whole life around. I scored a six ABE NRS level and reading, and a five level in math.


I also just found out about Sophia.org, and I feel like I just found my deus ex machina. For $99 month, you can take as many college classes as you want, all self paced, all online. If I can just knock out just 15 credits, I get upgraded to Tier 1, you get treated the same as someone with a high school diploma. That opens more jobs and makes my path way smoother. If I grind even just even little each day, I could knock out 15 credits in 1–2 months. Just in time to finish my GED classes for my good enough degree. That would put me in a whole new bracket, more MOS options, and a cleaner shot at earning a commission someday. And I could get promoted to corporal right out of boot camp.

Yeah, I dropped out of high school about two years ago. I was severely depressed and suicidal back then, even tried to commit suicide by cop. All it did was get me tased and hospitalized. After that, I kind of just shut down and became a total recluse. Spent way too much time online doing nothing meaningful.

Life only just started looking up recently. I reconnected with my dad and my older sister, for once it feels like I actually have a real opportunity to turn things around. I'm working on getting my GED, planning to knock out 15 college credits to qualify as Tier 1, I've been training to get fit, my diet took a complete 180. I know my past is messy, but I'm doing everything I can now to prove I'm not that same person anymore so I could get a waiver approved.

I didn't drop out I just took the GED test when I was in high school because I was sick of school. Once I realized I could breeze through the courses and get a diploma (this was back in 2001 so if you were an active high school student that took the GED and the SAT you would get an actual diploma)

I literally just couldn't do another year. 9/11 had just happened and I knew that sooner or later I was going to join the Army so I just said screw it how can I get through school as fast as possible.

I don't know if that's still an option these days for people in high school but IIRC I think one of the main reasons I was able to do it that way is because all I had left were elective credits (I spent half of my high school years in a charter school so we were able to pick our classes and I knocked the mandatory ones out in the beginning)

Shit, I was able to get my business admin degree in half the time it was supposed to take because I just doubled up on classes

That's the delusion of the internet though. 90% of these idiots who have ever said anything negative about infantry couldn't survive the first day on the job site with me. Construction is a hard job and I'm constantly on the ground with the crew when I run out of stuff to do in the office.
