Most importantly, one thing that is very important to realize that some so-called "research papers" may often have an ideological motive behind them; you see both leftoids and rightoids do this a lot.
For leftoids, they may come up with bullshit research papers on why they think trooning out kids is a "good thing". For rightoids, they may come up with their own bullshit research papers like this bullshit research paper that overly exaggerates the number of black dads abandoning their families.
In other words, check the source for your source. Is the source peer reviewed and can it be replicated in a controlled environment or is it just something that someone pulled out of their ass? I find that using the Scientific Method for everyday questions (it doesn't have to be just science) is a great way to see through complete bullshit.
