To be fair, I haven't heard the phrase dead name used for any other context. When it's just a normal name change people call it their old name. I know several people who had their name changed and they never called it dead naming.

Also if you look up the definition (I just googled it) it pretty much says it's the act of referring to a transgender or non binary person by their previous name. I think their reasoning is their past identity is dead or something and they are a new person now.
