Dump the thread listing from each subforum into a spreadsheet and give each one a single word as to what the main topic was. Count up all the different main topics. That'll tell you how many subforums you need.

If I want a more mainstream forum, I have to start a second separate forum (Onionfarms.online) that will distance itself from the lolcow culture and be more mainstream while still being connected to here (Onionfarms.com).

I admittedly came at you a little hard over this Nigerian thing. I'm glad your goals and motivations are at least well intended.
Your plan with splitting things between two forums is a good enough concept but I don't think you're accounting for the trolling that's guaranteed to take place if .online were to gain traction. You'd have your more schizophrenic users here to deal with on top of Kiwis popping in to cause problems.
You'd need very strict moderation and a way to verify accounts beyond email since that's the easiest thing in the world to sockpuppet.
Maybe only allow people to sign in through Facebook? There's nothing more normie friendly than FB, it's harder for the average lazy ween to sock onto, they log all user activity so you'll avoid CSAM spammers and other illegal activity from poisoning the well, etc.

I think you'd be inviting trouble by cross contaminating your branding. It would be bad for SEO and you don't want the normies stumbling across the more unhinged posts here when they're just trying to catch up on normal stuff over there.

That's a good point, but the thing is I want the Onionfarms brand to be recognized across the internet. Right now after I work on flattening the forum, I want to go through and reorganize the thread prefixes. The prefixes are just a complete mess.

I originally came to Onion because I was having issues with Kiwi culture and needed to vent. Thing is... it worked. Once the bitching was out of my system, I went back to Kiwi and was enjoying it again. It helped that some of the more extreme stupidity seemed to have died down (or maybe I was just in a mood and was only imagining it).

But yeah... part of the problem is that Onion gives me very much "It'll be better, and it'll have blackjack! and hookers!" vibes, and yet like many knockoffs has failed to measure up to the thing its knocking off.

And the big problem is.... admittedly one I don't know how to fix: basically, nobody is interested in anything outside of, basically, bitching about KF. I've tried, and others have tried, to start topics about other things... and have always gotten ignored, basically. Bitch about Null or KF and you get a lot of attention.

This was good and theraputic back when I was going through that phase, but the minute I was over it, I had no reason to stick around.

It's just like how FF7 has Chocobo Racing and Fort Condor, but nobody in their right mind would argue that those segments make FF7 an adequate replacement for Mario Kart or Command & Conquer.
