There's a thought I've been having.

It's kind of weird to say, but it feels like when SSJ_Ness got banned, the soul of Kiwifarms died and the site truly entered its death throes.

I'm not gonna say Ness is innocent--he absolutely said stupid shit and deserved that ban--but the weird thing is that sometimes Ness could be the most reasonable person in the room.

I recall once talking about Ranma 1/2 with him, an anime where most Kiwis look at the premise and call it "tranny shit," but Ness was one of the few people who understood that something can have a gender-bend premise and not have anything to do with trans stuff.

And this was Kiwifarms in a nutshell: half the time it was stupid, the other half the time they were some of the most reasonable people online.

While the forum had been losing its mind before Ness was kicked, it feels like his booting accelerated it.

somewhere in all that noise, yeah. you can still see it in the addiction support thread or bearhammers spergatory thread and i think at least a quarter of it or maybe more is well intentioned and coming from the heart. at least when they're dealing with their own.

thats the part that keeps me from deriving too much joy from null running it into the ground or chilling everyones speech , seemingly because theyre all afraid theyre going to be next.

and no, those people are not about to come over to a splinter site like this dump , or even someone else barfing a copy of xenforo up and running a kiwifarms spite house on it. the whole "blackjack and hookers" thing never works, it only works when its organic and everyone just collectively agrees its time to pick up our Barbie dolls and go play somewhere else. a good discussion group? im in. fuck "cow" boards though.

you're probably not wrong. when a forum has such a small userbase any power user leaving really fucks up everything. think about it like a community. say a high school of 1200 kids. one leaving really fucks up everything sometimes. especially when there is only 5% of those that really contribute a whole lot and keep people's spirits up.

in august they used to knock out about 60k posts per week, and now its under 50k meaning site activity has dropped 1/6th in the last 4 months. Another thing to note is the quality of the posts. because i'd say about 10% of posts at minimum in a given week are A&N posts of people going "fuck niggers/indians/trannies" or "i hate this" or "this rules" to any given article without adding anything to the conversation. despite the hype its a much smaller forum than people think.

thats whats funny about null banning people, its basically a userbase of 1200 people and he's expecting 600 paypigs. he only has 133 paypigs right now and that seems in line with the userbase. way more understandable for 1/8 people to donate vs 50% especially when you notice how many don't have jobs. it also shows you how crazy this whole thing is. he has 9 mods for a site with under 50k posts weekly. if even 1% of posts are flagged, that's still 500 posts for 9 mods to review, why he needs so many is insane.

its still 50,000 posts.. and they still sweep a fair amount stuff that wasnt reported. you could do with less but youd all be burned out and or clinically insane at some point. hovering over every word and tone policing some place like KF, for years and years and years... no thank you, not even for money.

especially when a place has so many performative "rules" they only pretend to enforce for PR , plausible deniability or legal reasons. what are you even getting out of bed for.

if i had to seethe and remind people of the same shit over and over again every single day , and the same people over and over and over again id lose my mind too. ask me how i know. :p or dont :p

if it were me id be mainlined into mysql and id be feeding posts and media into a local LLM , i wouldnt have time for that shit or personally involve myself in anything i wasnt summoned into. .....and that sounds like thats what he wants to do...... for everyone sake it hope it fucking works.

really underscores why its just petty and unnecessary to be a pissy cunt and lash out at or trash random people over bullshit when , okay maybe i wont shower you with cash donations , but theres people including me who might have been like oh yeah sure here let me throw a snippet up on pastebin or some scripts on github. now we're at "fuck you, i wouldnt even help you for money."

how many posts are you seeing that need sweeping? users are obnoxious enough to report "rule breakers" so most of your job is done for ya. you don't need to look at every single fucking post. Null's even admitted the mods were faster than even facebook's and that was before a 20% drop in posts and a doubling of mods meaning even less "work" to go around.

especially for a Free Speech forum jannys shouldn't be sweeping too much.

I'm gonna be honest, part of the problem is Onionfarms is literally just a place I go to, to bitch about KF.

Part of the problem is nothing else is really actively discussed here. I recall back when the news of The Completionist being a charity scammer first broke, I posted about it both here and on KF. On KF it became active, dug up more info, and even got discovered and used as a resource by the people who were investigating Completionist.

On Onionfarms I only got two replies and both were "who is the Completionist? Why do I care?"

And that pretty much says it all: Onionfarms isn't interested in being anything more than a refugee camp where we bitch about KF, and for that reason it will never be as big.

The other problem is that a lot of the people here aren't that different from Kiwis.

I think for a KF alternative to really work, it has to

A) have an identity outside of being a KF alternative.

B) have a culture that is very different from KF.

That said.... the biggest thing that saddens me about KF's decline is that they were an information resource, and when they go, they're gonna take a lot of valuable intel with them.
