Turkey Somaliland defense deal

Permit me to to sperg. We need some context here. The Somalia - Somaliland is a bitter hatred between the two regions Somaliland was a British Protectorate while Somalia was an Italian colony. After British Somaliland became independent in 60 it voted to merge with Italian Somaliland to become Somalia. In 69 General Mohammed Siad Barre came into power through a military coup. He then proceeded to turn Somalia into a one-party Marxist-Leninist state and came up with something called "Scientific Socialism". In 1977 he launched a war against neighboring Ethopia over the Ogaden region of Ethiopia which had a lot of Somalis living there (pan-Somalism). He lost and fell out of favor with the Soviet Union. So he decided to turn towards the West. Now what about the "Isaaq genocide" you have been reading about in this Twitter feud? Good question. In 1987 the former British Somaliland decided they had enough of Siad Barre and began to campaign for independence. In a two year war from 1987 to 1989 known as the Somaliland war for independence Siad Barre had the the military invade Somaliland. He leveled entire towns and leveled the capital Hargeisa. The Isaaq clan is one of the largest clans in the Horn of Africa (It makes up 80% of Somaliland). It has also been called the "Hargeisa Holocaust". By the time war was over people were tired of him. In January 1991 Siad Barre fled the country. And that is when Somalia feel into chaos. Somaliland however did not. And that's when Somaliland decided it no longer wanted to be associated with lower Somalia and Mogadishu. It declared its independence in 1991

So where does Ilhan Omar fit in? Her father was a colonel in the Somali Military under Siad Barre. The same army that bombed Somaliland.

That's actually quite informative, I wasn't aware of the backstory. I honestly think Somalia is a shitty place and don't care for their ocean piracy or infiltration of us politicians. So I'd support Somaliland over them if it means fucking over Somalia. I support online piracy, not not wannabe cartoon pirates. Somalia has lots of jihadists too.

Reason: British have always had a hand in starting civil wars in foreign 3rd world countries, I respect the dedication to it even if I don't always support their goals.

When you do politics and countries, you need the backstory for balance in a post.

I'm only posting news articles as they come without inserting my opinions if I don't know enough about it to give my own. I don't care enough to do that sort of thing and leave it up to the people who do care to voice their opinions or facts. You seemed to do a good enough job at it. You should probably make a pinned introduction thread including that post for this subforum to give a proper backstory for people who would be unaware, which I suspect is most of the site. I usually only keep up with potential flashpoints for ww3 and this doesn't register, at most it'll be another part of the division. Somalia against USA and Somaliland in alliance so I'm going with my allies.

An introductory post would fit in nicely.

I would give it a read for sure to catch up on everything. Geopolitics interests me, but I don't often get any emotional investment. I don't mind it being biased or unbiased either because I pick the side my country is on by default even if I don't support everything my country does.
