Turkiye Tensions between Turkey and Syria Explode into Rioting in Turkey and Syria

Tensions between Turkey and Syria explode as angry mobs in Turkey attacked Syrian refugees with fists and knives setting fire to Syrian owned shops, cars and residences where Syrian migrants are living. The unrest started when there were allegations on Sunday of a Syrian man who sexually molested his 7-year old cousin in a public bathroom in the Turkish city of Kayseri (about 340.4 km southwest of the capital Ankara). He was arrested by police and the mother and daughter put under state protection while police conducted an investigation into the matter.

That evening, a mob of angry men in Kayseri went on a rampage against the migrant population in Kayseri with videos of the riot being posted on social media and broadcast on Turkish television. This quickly ignited riots in other Turkish cities (Hatay, Konya and Istanbul) with angry mobs arming themselves with batons and marching through Syrian neighborhoods throwing rocks at the buildings. According to the Turkish Interior Minister at least 474 people has been arrested in connection with the violence.

Turkey is currently home to 3.5 million Syrian refugees due to the 2011 civil war in Syria and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's open-door policy of accepting them in. Turkey and Syria are looking to restore diplomatic relations which were severed in March 2012 due to the Civil War in Syria. Throughout the conflict, President Erdogan supported jihadi groups in Syria seeking to overthrow the regime of Bashar Assad. However Turkey and Syria are now looking to reconcile their differences and restore diplomatic relations.

However, public opinion in Turkey towards the Syrian Refugees has soured due to the complaints about Syrians coming to Turkey and working for low wages displacing native Turkish citizens.

The riots in Turkey against Syrian immigrants have caused counter riots in Northern Syria with Syrians firing at Turkish troops were fired upon in Afrin (a city in Northern Syria) in retaliation for the riots in Turkey.

Everyone who goes to Türkiye has no dignity and loves insults and humiliation. We are tired and we want to tell you that the Turkish people do not look at you, Arabs, as anything but the most vile of creation The truth is that those who go to them are the most despicable of people, because it is not possible for a person with dignity to go to a people he hates and holds grudges against. The Turkish government is satisfied with this.
