India and Pakistan both gained their independence from British rule at midnight on August 14-15, 1947, following the passage of the Indian Independence Act of 1947. The Indian subcontinent was divided into two countries: India (predominately Hindu majority) and Pakistan (predominately Muslim majority). The partition led to one of the largest migrations in human history filled with religious conflict and violence.

The Indian Independence Act of 1947 formally ended British rule in India and established two independent countries (India and Pakistan). The Indian Independence act of 1947 also divided the Bengal and Punjab provinces along religious lines. This division also resulted in a massive displacement of people with millions relocating to their respective majority religious areas.

The partition was accompanied by widespread violence between the two communities. The Punjab and Bengal regions were hit especially hard with hundreds of thousands of people being killed. The legacy of the violence continues to affect India – Pakistan Relations particularly in the disputed region of Jammu and Kashmir.

Both India and Pakistan celebrate August 15th as their Independence Day. However Pakistan also celebrates August 14th as Independence Day which is the date Muhammad Ali Jinnah was sworn in as Governor-General.
