This is what someone posted on Kiwifarms on why he likes Kiwifarms so much compared to Reddit:

- I love the forum style of social websites, and there are few other options out there that have a consistent and varied userbase.
- I like KF for events that are in-motion. No site is better to get the scoop on breaking news. Yes X/twitter is faster, but it’s so clouded with shit that it’s hard to tell what is legitimate and what is an old photo dug up/ just a lie/ etc. This is the best place to see the whole package of headline, photos, videos, reactions, farmer reactions.
- I’m not the first to say this and I won’t be the last, but the reddit updoot system + how comments are buried is just awful and encourages the most boring crowd pleasing ideas or jokes. Here (and yes despite reactions) posts are given equal weight. If someone has a lot of trashcans on a post I’m still reading it because it’s not essentially hidden by the system.
- I like lolcows! I’ve been regularly lurking since at least 2019 and no one does it quite like the farms. Some are horrifying, some are hilarious, but the best source for all is right here, home sweet home. It is fantastic to have lolcow updates in order in a neat thread.
- I think it is so important for a well-rounded perspective to read views outside of what reddit jannies prescribe. That site straight up does not allow right wing discussion; I lost any faith it in years ago when they would delete every ‘gender critical’ sub regardless of how mild or extreme it is. Some of the boards have high quality posts with people explaining their thoughts in depth. I don’t know a single other spot on the internet where I can read 500+ word posts that genuinely explore the foundation and logic behind right wing perspectives.
- Here one can actually talk about mixed views on various positions without being scolded back into partisan orthodoxy. I, and probably the majority of thread regulars, have been called 'right wing' before for saying a single point off of the left/right prescriptions. To use that silly "in this house we believe:" yard sign, here I can hold the views that 'science is real' and 'gays are fine' and 'open borders is a stupid concept and you're not living in the real world if you think that is at all possible' without getting banned. This is not at all the case on reddit, where I'd certainly get a ban. I suppose what I'm saying here is that KF allows nuanced personal opinions, which is reflective of what people actually hold IRL.
- Odder but also valuable is it is interesting to read the thoughts of people I think are batshit insane (pink triangles you are valid). Always neat to learn the how far the political poles go.
- I like the Farms' forum culture, which is very much tied to your approach to moderation. People can fling shit at each other all day unless one of the few hard lines is crossed. It is insanely cathartic to see a retarted post met with “that’s retarted” without both users being banned. I can’t think of a single suggestion I would have for moderation, this is how I wish other forums would do it. It’s great that some threads are for more informal chatting, and others have a culture of effortposts. The mix is good.
- I have deep respect to you for overcoming the endless legal battles and keeping the site running. I appreciate that you value free speech far more than the lip service most people give it. I think the larger scale political or legal actions you’ve initiated or participated in are doing good for the world. As a small side, massive kudos for supporting Gorl Talk and keeping poorly behaved moids at the gate.
- I like that Kiwi Farms supports mixed media posting. I don’t know where else one could have a video, a series of imbedded photos, a pdf, an mp3, and a zip file all within a single post. Shit, I don’t even know where pdfs alone could be easily shared with conversational posts.
- the Kino Kasino chat & Bossmanjack thread are one of the best things I’ve participated in online in a decade. The mix of discussion, updates and reporting, and some of the funniest OC I’ve ever seen is unparalleled. This place is a tremendous source of humor, there are many threads where reading them can brighten my day.
In short, no where makes me laugh as much or get as thunkful as KF, reading mixed opinions is important and most of the internet doesn't allow that, I'm a boomer who likes the forum format, I find the moderation (which is a direct consequence of how you manage the site) pretty much perfect, and it's best place for lolcows, critiquing minorities, and getting the details of habbenings.
Our userbase: we have 2965 members. Currently we have 897 online ( 7 members, 890 guests). In the admin graph, we average approximately 70 to 90 active users/day.
Getting the scoop on breaking news and happenings:
This is the big thing we need to work on. When I had the integration with Bluesky there were updates we got with selected material but there was a technical problem and I had this hidden. It appears to be solved. I would like to go through and see which lolcows also post on Bluesky so we can get breaking updates on lolcow happenings as well. I am working on ways to incorporate more lolcow content into our forum.
As for X, that is also partially done. My developer is very good. But Pakistan is about 10 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time. He lives in the Punjab region but his office is in the capital Islamabad. According to him, he has a 5 hour commute from his house to his office. He also has a number of other websites that he handles as well. So if things are a little slow, bear with me,
it is not because of lack of concern on my part.
Once X is completely integrated here, I would like to be able to get automatic updates like we have with Bluesky.
"I like lolcows": Onionfarms likes lolcows too.
Moderation: He mentioned that Reddit is a ban-happy place when it comes to right-wing viewpoints compared to Kiwifarms. Like I mentioned before, banning should only be done as a last resort, not a first resort. I don't want people banned because they are right-wing, left-wing or no wing.
He specifically mentioned this:
I like that Kiwi Farms supports mixed media posting. I don’t know where else one could have a video, a series of imbedded photos, a pdf, an mp3, and a zip file all within a single post. Shit, I don’t even know where pdfs alone could be easily shared with conversational posts.
Please tell me what file types cannot be uploaded so I can make a list and get to work on them.
An admin mentioned about coolers.com as a way to give you more choices in the letter coloring. I have already contacted my developer inquiring if there is a plugin for this.
Kiwifarms has a Community Featured Submissions. According to my Developer, this is actually the featured plugin that has been modified. Hopefully by next week will be having two featured plugins working.
1st: Will be the Community Featured Submissions. I am having one built that will be just like the Kiwifarms at the top of the page. This was built from scratch and is in the final stages of testing according to my Developer.
2nd: The Original Featured Submissions plugin that we currently have will remain as is.
Integrating with mainstream: This remains my toughest challenge and it will be a long-term process. I want this to be a forum that will be comfortable for both insiders and outsiders. I will formulate a marketing plan after the Community Featured Submissions is completed.
