Opeyemi Famakin, a renowned Nigerian food journalist and critic, was born on April 4, 1993, and hails from Ile-Ife in Osun State. As the eldest of three children, he spent most of his childhood in Ikoyi, Lagos, before relocating abroad with his family. Due to his father’s job, Opeyemi’s family frequently moved, allowing him to explore a variety of cuisines across different regions. He credits this nomadic lifestyle for shaping his diverse culinary palate. His mother, a key inspiration in his journey, often took the family to various restaurants to try new dishes, which ignited his deep interest in food. Growing up in Lagos, a culturally vibrant city, further exposed him to a wide range of culinary experiences, ultimately fueling his passion and setting the foundation for his career in food journalism.

Opeyemi Famakin began his formal education in Lagos, attending Corona School and later Christ the King International School. He went on to study Mass Communication at Covenant University, where he earned his degree. After graduating, Opeyemi pursued a career as a lifestyle journalist, with a particular focus on food writing. He spent several years in journalism, quickly rising through the ranks to become an editor at a young age. He joined Pulse NG in his sophomore year of university, and by the age of 24, he had already secured a position as a senior editor. However, after a few more years in the field, he felt he had reached the limits of his journalism career and transitioned into advertising and brand strategy. During this time, his journey as a food critic had already begun, though he hadn’t yet realized that food criticism would become his defining role.
