I watched a lot of stuff that was on adult swim growing up back in the day (cowboy bebop, Harvey birdman attorney at law, samurai champloo, brak, Inuyasha, space Ghost coast to coast) and remember evangelion. I always hated asuka, she was annoying as fuck. I didn't care much for any of the characters, in fact. But the robot fights were cool. Big O was another giant robot anime I watched. I never thought of anime as any different from regular cartoons and thought it was just different art styles like samurai jack, Dexter's lab, x men evolution, justice League, teen titans, Flintstones, Jetsons, etc. in that some are just similar or more detailed because it's made by the same people or had better funding.

If you google this name, you will it overwhelmingly produces lolicon hentai. To the best of my knowledge, he hasn't drawn hentai at all and nothing more explicit than the Lain ED, but he has repeatedly contributed art to their publications, such as here (warning, nothing explicit on this page, but this is from a loli hentai doujin) and here. He at the least does not find this content particularly objectionable or associating with people who produce it.

Evangelion is a mainstream anime, and with how neurotic people are about this stuff now, there is a vast number who've convinced themselves this stuff is all just meant to be "ironic" or a "deconstruction" or "showing you how bad it is by being indistinguishable from what it's supposedly critiquing." This thinking isn't that new ("Hideaki Anno hates fanservice and otaku and definitely isn't a weird perverted sperg" goes back many years), but it seems to be the default cope for people who'd otherwise dismiss any series featuring the same content as child porn.
