A man accused of brutally killing his wife in front of their children at Olutayo Alao Street, River Valley Estate, Ojodu, Lagos, has been found dead in what police believe was a suspected suicide. The man allegedly returned to the crime scene to clean up evidence after the attack before fleeing, according to multiple sources familiar with the incident.

The suspect, Ayoola Ayanwale, is alleged to have stabbed his wife, Ganiyat Ayoola, repeatedly on Thursday night, inflicting fatal injuries to several parts of her body, including her chest. Neighbours said her screams for help echoed through the estate, but no immediate intervention came as the violence unfolded inside the home. One of the couple’s children, their 13-year-old daughter, reportedly ran out of the house screaming for help as she watched her mother bleed from multiple wounds. Mrs Ayoola was later rushed to the hospital by her brother whom she managed to call immediately after the incident but was confirmed dead on arrival.

Sources said that after she was taken away, the husband allegedly returned to the house, cleaned blood stains from his body and the surroundings, packed his belongings, and fled the estate. Residents claimed the couple had a long history of domestic abuse, with the woman said to have endured repeated physical violence before her death.
The suspect was declared wanted following the incident. However, on Friday the Ogun State Police Command confirmed that a man believed to be Mr Ayanwale was found in an open field in the Sotubo area of Sagamu, Ogun State, gasping for breath, with a bottle of suspected poisonous substance nearby.

He was later pronounced dead at a hospital he was rushed to.
Although the police are yet to release a full official statement on the killing, investigators believe the events leading up to the woman’s death point to possible premeditation, given the suspect’s alleged actions before and after the attack.

Police sources confirmed the case is under investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department of the the Ogun State Police Command because the estate falls under its jurisdiction.
