I've heard this take a few times and it's always met with alot of disapproval because it's observably retarded. "There's no reason EVER for someone above 18 to talk to an under 18 no matter what!!"

Yes, it's perfectly normal to have mild surface level conversations with a minor and they don't even have to be related to you. Teachers, coaches, youth groups, whatever do it all the time. If you can't have a normal conversation with a minor and need to shield yourself from being a pedo creep by any means necessary you're just telling on yourself. I voice chat in video games and don't break down in tears if someone says they're a minor. Oh, the horror.

Hold on a minute: I've never been in the education field but I believe that school districts may have policies about teachers and other employees communicating directly with students on their social media.

I think the original context was communicating with minors "in game chat", which seems harmless to me as long as it's game related.
