This mindset isn't exclusive to the Jews, you also see this mindset with Asians, Indians, and some Latino groups. Why are so many Asians medical doctors and engineers? Because the Asians pushed their kids to get good grades so they can go to some prestigious Ivy league school.

My ex-wife was born in Taiwan and a lot of this centers around the concept of "face (i.e. how you are perceived by your family others)". And yes there were a lot of high school kids that would commit suicide because they perceived themselves as "losing face" because they did not get into a good university over there. Ever heard of a cram school ? They are after hours educational institutions that provide tutoring to help students pass entrance exams to get into prestigious high schools or universities? And this isn't just restricted to teens trying to get into college. A lot of them will cater to young children so they can pass the entrance exams to get into prestigious primary schools.
