Valeria Márquez, a 23-year-old beauty influencer, was shot and killed on Monday, May 13, while livestreaming from her salon in Jalisco, Mexico. Márquez had gained a following of more than 75.7 thousand users on Instagram and nearly 100 thousand on TikTok. Márquez was reportedly engaging with followers on TikTok Live when a man posing as a delivery driver entered the salon. Shortly before the shooting, she received a package that appeared to be a gift. After handing it to her, the man pulled out a firearm and shot her multiple times in the head and torso. She died at the scene.
The attack was captured on video, according to authorities. Clients and employees inside the salon reportedly panicked during the shooting. Both surveillance footage and the livestream are currently under review by the Jalisco State Prosecutor’s Office, which confirmed that the case is being investigated under the femicide protocol. Márquez was a well-known figure in the regional influencer scene, sharing beauty tutorials, product reviews, and updates from her business. She also worked as a model and won a regional beauty pageant in 2021. The salon remained closed on Wednesday, May 15. A makeshift memorial made up of flowers and candles was placed outside by friends, clients, and fans.
As of Tuesday evening, May 14, no suspects had been identified and no arrests had been made. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility that Márquez was specifically targeted. Advocacy organizations are calling on Mexican officials to strengthen protections for women and conduct full investigations into gender-based violence.
