Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned Greece that his country’s newest ballistic missiles could reach Athens. This was in response to Greece militarizing the Aegean Islands.

“Greece is afraid of our missiles. They say that the TAYFUN missile will hit Athens, it will, unless you stay calm.” The TAYFUN (Turkish for “typhoon”) is a short-range ballistic missile with a range of around 560 kilometers. On December 6, the foreign minister Mevlut Cavusoglu threatened Greece with a military invasion if it does not demilitarize its Aegean Islands at a joint press conference with Romanian Foreign Affairs Minister Bogdan Aurescu.

Greece angrily responded by comparing Turkey to North Korea. “North Korean attitudes cannot and must not enter the North Atlantic alliance.” Greek Foreign Minister Niko Dendias said while attending an EU meeting in Brussels.

The rivalry between Greece and Turkey has long been an issue between the two NATO allies having roots in the Ottoman takeover of Constantinople in 1453. Greece became an independent country in 1830 and formally established relations with the Ottoman Empire. In 1974 Turkey invaded Cyprus and set up the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus which to this day is not recognized by any country except Turkey.

My friend was conscripted during the last Turkish march on the Greek borders and I tried really hard to get in touch with the Greek consulate to see if I'd be able to join their military. I hear that immigrants serving in the Greek military get citizenship after the fact and that'd be pretty cool. Either way, I hope they use live ammo at the border this time.

There are certain rivalries between countries that go back a long way. Morocco vs. Algeria, India vs. Pakistan, Greece vs. Turkey, China vs. Taiwan. They have never really buried the hatchet and every so often it bubbles up to the surface. But I also want to balance it with cow reporting.
