Hunter Biden was indicted on nine tax charges in California by a special investigation that was launched into his business dealings. There are three felonies and six misdemeanors that were added to the federal firearms charges in Delaware in 2018.
These charges have been instigated against the backdrop of the 2024 election and come after the collapse of a plea deal that would have spared him jail time.
According to special counsel David Weiss he spent millions of dollars on an extravagant lifestyle while overlooking paying his taxes. During the time Hunter Biden was dealing with drug abuse and addiction between 2016 and 2019 he owed at least $1.4 million in taxes (which have since been paid).
If Hunter is convicted of these charges, he could spend up to 17 years in prison. Weiss said that the special counsel probe is remaining open. Biden’s defense attorney accused Weiss of “bowing to Republican pressure”
Defense attorney Abbe Lowell said in a statement: “Based on the facts and the law, if Hunter’s last name was anything over then Biden, the charges in Delaware and now California would not have been brought.”
The White House would not comment but prosecutor Leo Wise claims that Biden was living a lifestyle of drugs, luxury hotels, strippers, and exotic cars instead of paying his taxes.
The indictment is coming at the same time the Congressional Republicans are trying to impeach President Biden on charges he was engaging in an influence-pedaling scheme with his son. The House is expected to vote next week on formally authorizing the inquiry.
While there is no evidence that President Biden abused his powers or accepted bribes, there have been questions about the ethics surrounding the international business affairs of the Biden family.
The separate, long-running criminal investigation into Hunter Biden was originally expected to end with a plea deal where Hunter would have gotten two years on probation for pleading guilty to misdemeanor tax charges and avoided prosecution on the gun charge if he stayed out of trouble.
Former President Donald Trump as well as other Republicans broadcast it as a “sweetheart deal”.
Two IRS investigators who testified before Congress stated that the Justice Department had mishandled and deliberately slow-poked the investigation into the President’s son. These allegations have been officially denied by Justice officials.
The new tax charges include felony charges of filing a false return and tax evasion as well as misdemeanor failure to file and failure to pay. The defense signals if plans to fight the new charges relying on immunity provisions from the original plea deal.
