Nigeria is currently having one of those classic celebrity fanbase wars, except this one escalated into a full-on multi-day meltdown involving Seun Kuti (Fela’s son), Wizkid FC (Wizkid’s fan army), and eventually Wizkid himself.
For Context:
Seun got fed up with Wizkid fans constantly dragging Fela into debates, including the usual “Wizkid is bigger than Fela” and “Wizkid is the new Fela” takes.
He posted a long IG video telling Wizkid FC to stop using his father’s name as a comparison tool:
He argued that calling any modern artist “the new Fela” is ignorance and disrespect:
He also took shots at fan culture in general:
Things escalated when a Wizkid fan reportedly suggested Seun drop his longtime nickname “Big Bird” because Wizkid is referred to by fans as “Biggest Bird”.
Seun wasn’t having it:
He then claimed Wizkid’s team enjoys the comparisons instead of shutting them down:
During this rant, Seun also flexed how Fela’s legacy still pays:
And then basically turned it into a “your father never accomplished anything” rant aimed at random fans:
He first posted a clip of a woman speaking Yoruba, basically saying Seun has lost it and his family should step in:
She also insulted Seun heavily and implied Fela would be irrelevant today without Wizkid keeping his name alive (lol).
Then Wizkid stopped playing nice and went direct:
