Controversial YouTuber Shane Dawson and his husband Ryland Adams, are under fire after revealing the birth of their twin sons via surrogate. What should have been a heartwarming moment for the couple has spiraled into one of the most explosive online backlashes in recent memory. And it all started with a baby announcement.
On December 11, 2023, Shane and Ryland took to Instagram to share their big news: they’re now proud dads to twin boys, Jet Parker Adams Yaw and Max Chandler Adams Yaw, born just days earlier, on December 7, via surrogacy. The photos showed the new dads beaming, holding their babies in coordinated hospital outfits. But while fans of the couple flooded the post with congratulations, not everyone was clapping.
Almost immediately, the internet came unglued. High-profile streamers and content creators like Adin Ross and Sneako didn’t hold back. Adin Ross reportedly went live, calling the situation “child trafficking” and questioning how someone with Shane’s controversial past was even allowed to adopt or use surrogacy in the first place. Sneako chimed in with similar outrage, claiming that the entire situation was “Hollywood weirdness” and a “dangerous precedent.”
Their explosive reactions weren’t isolated. Across Twitter (or “X”), Reddit, and YouTube, thousands of users began dredging up Shane Dawson’s murky history, one that includes accusations of inappropriate jokes about children, a disturbing sense of humor that led to his cancellation several times over, and a long-standing distrust from much of the online community. Some even used the opportunity to revive disturbing clips from Shane’s old videos, clips that he has since apologized for, but which clearly haven’t been forgotten.
Critics argue that regardless of how much time has passed or how many apologies he’s issued, someone with that kind of legacy should not be raising children. In the words of one angry commenter: “If this was anyone else with Shane’s track record, CPS would be knocking at the door.”
Others have gone a step further, accusing the couple of “buying babies” and exploiting the surrogacy system for social media clout. “They’re using those kids as props,” one post read. “This is not about love, it’s about image repair.”
In contrast, defenders of the couple are begging people to let go of the past and allow Shane and Ryland the chance to grow into parenthood. “He made mistakes, sure,” one fan tweeted. “But people change. They clearly love these babies. Just let them live.”
But for many, the damage has already been done. The phrase “child trafficking” started trending by evening, thanks to how often it was thrown around by internet personalities reacting to the news. It’s worth noting, though, that no legal accusations or investigations have been filed. The phrase is being used in a moral, not legal, context by those who feel Shane Dawson simply shouldn’t be a parent.
