There are people that take every game too seriously no matter what it is, like Mario party speed runners. I don't think it's the game devs fault there are obsessed people who dedicate parts of their life to something. Because it applies to everything. Even kids games, so I don't fault the game itself. People are just naturally competitive and will set up unofficial competitions even if there are no official ones. When companies make official ones they just see it as a way to make money and don't actually care beyond that.
