Why the fuck did Ken change random details on the default theme that people are actively using?

If working in the production environment is your only option, then make a copy of the theme and work on the copy, so your users aren't burdened with the constant and breaking changes. You can get their opinions by asking them to try out the copy. You can always throw it away and start over if it doesn't work out.

Your user experience should always be priority #1.

It's not like I'm trying to join a secret society or get a security clearance. I just want to join a discussion forum.

Your request is not only unnecessary, but it's also a huge red flag. It suggests that you're more interested in monitoring and controlling your users than in creating a welcoming and inclusive community. Newsflash: this isn't a police state, and you're not the internet police.
