She’s the voice behind Loki’s clock-faced chaos queen Miss Minutes and Teen Titans' moody Raven, but Tara Strong made headlines for a very different reason in 2023. On her 52nd birthday, the Canadian voice acting icon found herself at the center of an internet firestorm over claims she was “fired for being Jewish”, a claim hotly disputed by her former employers. Strong was dropped from the independent animated series Boxtown in October 2023 after a series of controversial posts and likes regarding the Israel-Palestine conflict, igniting a messy, highly public back-and-forth between the actress and the show’s creators.
According to Boxtown studio Bandit Mill Animation, the decision stemmed from “a trend among Tara’s recent online activity,” which they said included posts spreading “controversial messages” about Palestinians amid the then-ongoing crisis. Strong had reportedly liked a post considered Islamophobic following Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel, and later tweeted cryptically, “They were smart to start with a country people love to hate.”
Despite later walking back some of her actions, claiming she hadn’t read one tweet thoroughly, Strong’s follow-up post suggested something far more sinister: “I was fired for being Jewish,” she wrote bluntly on X (formerly Twitter), stunning fans and colleagues alike. The drama broke after Strong had already wrapped her voice work on Loki season 2, where her character Miss Minutes plays a pivotal role. Despite the backlash and internet debate, Marvel Studios remained mum on the subject, quietly airing the series just a month after the controversy.
Strong’s MCU streak didn’t stop there. In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, she also replaced Miley Cyrus as the voice of Mainframe, further cementing her place in the Marvel universe, even as Twitter storms brewed around her. Strong’s firing sparked immediate backlash from the Boxtown fanbase, especially after the actress claimed antisemitism played a role. But the show’s co-writer Spencer Rothbell, along with voice actor Alex Hirsch, both of whom are Jewish, publicly denied that her religion had anything to do with the decision.
“This was not a difficult decision,” Boxtown stated in an official post. “Our platform gives us a duty to be careful when it comes to hateful messages and misinformation online. This extends to our cast and crew.” While her exit from Boxtown cast a shadow, Strong has hardly disappeared. She voiced Gru Jr. in 2024’s box office hit Despicable Me 4, continued fan-favorite roles, and maintained a loyal base of supporters who see her as unfairly targeted.
But behind the scenes, the controversy lingers. The future of Strong’s involvement in high-profile projects remains uncertain, Marvel has yet to comment on whether Miss Minutes will tick again in any upcoming titles. In the meantime, Tara Strong remains defiant. Whether celebrated or criticized, she’s not staying silent.
