Portugal and Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, 28, and his younger brother André Silva, 25, were both killed in a car crash near Zamora, Spain, authorities confirmed on Thursday. The Spanish Civil Guard said the fatal incident occurred just past midnight on a remote highway stretch about an hour west of Zamora. The luxury Lamborghini they were traveling in reportedly veered off the road and caught fire. Firefighters responded as the flames spread to nearby vegetation.
According to officials, no other vehicles were involved, and early investigations suggest a blown tire may have caused the driver to lose control. It remains unclear which brother was behind the wheel at the time. Both men were found deceased at the scene and their bodies are now undergoing forensic analysis. Jota’s sudden death comes just weeks after he married his longtime partner Rute Cardoso, with whom he shares three young children, their youngest born last year. The couple had recently celebrated their love with a heartfelt post: “Yes to forever.”
Jota, full name Diogo José Teixeira da Silva, joined Liverpool FC in 2020 from Wolverhampton Wanderers. Over five seasons, he made 182 appearances, scoring crucial goals and helping the club win multiple trophies, including the Premier League, FA Cup, and two Carabao Cups. His younger brother, André Silva, was a professional footballer with Portuguese side Penafiel, playing in the country’s lower leagues. Tributes have poured in from across the football world. Liverpool FC issued a statement expressing their devastation:
"Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota."
The club added that it would not make further comment at this time, asking for privacy and respect for the grieving families. Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro and the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) also released statements mourning the loss of the national star and his brother. As fans around the world react in disbelief, the football community unites in mourning two young lives cut heartbreakingly short.
