In a heartfelt and candid interview with Pati Chapoy, Mexican singer Ángela Aguilar revealed the emotional toll that public scrutiny has taken on her since confirming her relationship with fellow singer Christian Nodal. The 21-year-old artist, daughter of legendary singer Pepe Aguilar, admitted that the backlash on social media pushed her into a mental health crisis that led to rapid weight loss and ongoing anxiety. “I’m not going to tell you it hasn’t been difficult because I’m a human being,” Ángela shared. “I’m 21 years old, living through a stage in my life with many fears, hopes, and reality checks.”
Since the news of her relationship went public, Ángela said she's been inundated with cruel and invasive comments, which triggered severe anxiety. The pressure and stress became so overwhelming that she lost around 10 kilograms (over 20 pounds) in just one month. “I think it was a lot of stress, a lot of anxiety, a lot of things. I recently lost a lot of weight,” she explained. “For me, weight hasn’t been that important in my life… but I have issues with my joints—I was born with a disability. So I try to move a lot, to exercise, to strengthen my knees.”
But it wasn’t just the emotional toll—it was the fear of simply being out in public. Ángela revealed she stopped doing everyday things like going to the supermarket because she began noticing strangers recording her from afar, often without her knowledge or consent. “It wasn’t like taking a normal photo with someone,” she said. “They were filming me from a distance. I started to get anxiety attacks, so I stopped going to the supermarket for a while.”
The singer described this new phase of fame as darker than anything she had experienced before, saying the level of public aggression and online cruelty has been deeply unsettling. “It scares me because people are very cruel. They do ugly and aggressive things, and they don’t even know me.” Despite the pain, Ángela is now in therapy and taking steps to heal. She acknowledged that although the negativity has wounded her, it’s also made her stronger. “Right now, I’ve saved myself, I’ve taken care of myself, and I feel like I’m in a much more secure, stronger state of mind. And I think I’ve become stronger after so much damage.”
